St. Remedius Radio: “The Silver Machine”

Surmisals On The Identity Of One Of The Universe’s Most Famed Time Travelers

(Who was St. Remedius? And why is a medical college named after him?)

Of all of the faculty at St. Remedius Medical College at the point of its disappearance, only a few generated more speculation, more rumors, more assumptions, and more blatant fabrications in the time since the disappearance than the identity and origin of the head of the St. Remedius Advanced Technologies department, only known as “Bennett.” Of equal curiosity was his famed device, the Silver Machine, a regular feature at the St. Remedius Time Traveler Balls. Most apparatus used for time travel, no matter the manufacture, navigational capabilities, or power source, took a linear approach to traveling across time as well as space, requiring travelers to map, very carefully, a particular destination’s position in all six axes of reality before starting their trip. Skimp on calculations, and one’s beautiful time barge might stop at the expected time but at an undesired location, such as where the locale is now in space-time instead of where it was thousands or millions of years earlier. (Hence, why most thaumaturgical forms of time travel require extensive testing before sending live subjects, as magic cares little about throwing spell-throwers into black holes or into the shockwave of supernovae.) The Silver Machine, though, by all best measurements, took a quantum approach, appearing in all places and all times before narrowing to the desired locale and date. Not only was this so much safer and more precise, but it minimized paradoxes and prevented hijackings (a regular problem with most standard time travel methodologies), but only allowed a maximum of two additional travelers in addition to the pilot. Rumor had it that it was originally designed for six, but no information exists today on either the reasons for the passenger restrictions or the whereabouts and fate of the original compatriots, if any.

With the disappearance of St. Remedius, the Silver Machine’s whereabouts are unknown, other than logged encounters of its previous and possible future visits. (Time travel is less like following a linear map than in constructing a couch.) This may be because of Bennett’s notorious waywardness, obligations that he felt obligated to meet, or simply because he was sick and tired of being asked if the Silver Machine was bigger on the inside. Because of the flexibility of vaso-chronal theory and its implementations, allowing it to create its own quantum pockets at any size and internal conditions, it WAS, but he was tired of being asked.

And while you’re at it, the request lines are now open.
